Biography
“Helena Hartmann (Ahaus, 1985) is a visual Artist and Performer and grew up in a small and catholic village in Germany.
She worked as an assistant prop maker at the prestigious “Thalia Theatre Hamburg” (headed by directer Ulrich Khuon) in 2004/2005.
Helena studied at the AKI in the Netherlands (BFA Sculpture with First-Class Honours, Tutors: Helen Frik, Hans Hovy and Ernst Varkevisser) and the Royal College of Art in London (MFA Sculpture, headed by Jordan Baseman, Tutors: Jordan Baseman and Benedict Drew), (famous alumni “Sönke Wortmann, David Hockney, Barbara Hepworth”).
Helena Hartmann lives and works in Germany and is following several “Artist-In-Residency Programs” in Germany and abroad.
She did freelance work as a Guest Lecturer and worked as Visiting Tutor at the Aki (Enschede, Holland), Camberwell College of Arts (London, UK), is Art Teacher at the Community College (Ahaus and Freudenstadt, Germany), was art teacher at the “Open Studio for refugee children and German children”(Jugendkulturwerkstatt Stadtlohn e.V.,2015-2019) and teached Art at Losberg-Talentschool in Stadtlohn (2016/2017) and St. Marienschule in Vreden(2018/2019).
Helena has exhibited, performed and resided in the Netherlands, Scandinavia, France, Germany, UK, USA, Dubai, Spain, Portugal and Latvia for example at:

She received the German DAAD Award in 2014/2015, was nominated for the New Jersey Sculpture Award in 2010 and her Performance “Wogloide” was a huge success at the Stockholm Fringe Festival and was broadcastet on Swedish Television twice. Helena performed at the Stockholm Fringe Festival in 2011 and 2013 (The famous Swedish Fringe Festival with amongst others John Malkovich and Dorian Wood as participating artists) and Artist Either Or invited her to perform for the Full Pink Moon Opera Povera by Sean Griffin (USA) in 2020.
In collaboration with “Belle Chen” from VISUALISE! she made the music video “Scalae Volubilis” for the Royal Academy of Music Piano Festival 2014.
Beside that Helena was trained as a classical singer by swedish soprano Louise Werner from 2003 until 2013.
One of her longest performative works was a 7-Days ongoing performance piece “7 Days”, which she realized in her residency at a.m. London “All Hallows Church” in London in April 2017.

She realized the Social Art-Project PARSOL (Participation of Refugees in Social Life) in Lousa-Portugal in mid-October 2017 (commissioned by ERASMUS and the European Commission).

Helena moved to Detroit in Summer 2018 and was a resident at Hamtramck Disneyland (MI/USA) from August until October.

Helena Hartmann recently awarded the Long-term Residence Scholarship for “Antonie Leins Künstlerinnenhaus Horb” in Horb a.N. (Southern Germany).
She is the 11th Scholarship Holder at Künstlerinnenhaus Horb from June 2019 until July 2022.

In 2022 she received the Musikfonds Grant “Neustart Kultur”.
In 2024/2025 Helena receives the MKW Grant “Förderprogramm Kultur und Weiterbildung” twice and she can realize two inclusive projects (Performance Project & Sculpture Laboratory).
